People who have intrinsic goals (such as being more skilled or compassionate) tend to be happier than those with extrinsic goals (making more money or buying a nicer car, for instance), says Jim Hjort, a licensed clinical social worker who founded the Right Life Project based on this idea. I've learned to look for ways to spend money to stay in closer contact with my family and friends; to promote my health; to work more efficiently; to eliminate sources of irritation and marital conflict; to support important causes; and to have enlarging experiences.

I seek people who lift my spirits, validate my feelings and remind me that I can change my situation. I guess the magical amount of money is somewhere between 2x and 3x of an average salary in your living area (and not drowning in debt) when money still plays a great role in your happiness levels.

I promise I'm not trying to sound like a stereotypical yogi or anything, but for real, meditation has the power to dramatically change your life and your attitude about living it. If you want to have a happy day, be kind, don't judge others, and have respect for people.

I have an amazing family that I look forward to coming home to every night, a job that is meaningful and provides balance, and a burgeoning small business that excites me. Take comfort in those around you that have positive attitudes and can make you feel better about anything going on in your life. For me, it means getting rid of some of life's complexities so you can spend more time with people you love and do more of the things you love.

Sometimes these interim steps don't make you happy directly, but the happiness you achieve from attaining your goal MOTIVATION will be so great that it totally overwhelms the temporary inconveniences and dissatisfactions you have to endure in order to get there.

I really had no idea who I was or how to live a happy life. When we are there for the people in our lives — and when they're there for us — we are more resilient, resourceful, and successful. Even if you're dealing with the grief of a lost loved one, remember that in time you will feel better.

Don't spend your free time feeling bad about things that have happened. And people who were emotionally closer to the pets also tended to have deeper ties to the humans in their lives. You can make adjustments starting today that will instantly help you feel better, think more clearly, and live more effectively.
